Weekly Free Language Exchange in Hong Kong
At Language Exchange Hong Kong we run weekly language exchanges where you can come and meet and connect with other people who speak Cantonese or speak English, and have fun while you do it all for free!
EVERY SUNDAY. EVERY WEDNESDAY. 2 options! Come to one, or both!
Learn Cantonese in Hong Kong FREE
Learn Cantonese in Hong Kong by speaking with friendly locals, and actually turning that experience into a genuine friendship. We believe that the best way to learn cantonese in Hong Kong is to completely immerse yourself in it and to have friends that actually speak Cantonese. So at Language Exchange Hong Kong, our focus is on providing a fun place where people can come and learn cantonese, actually get a chance to speak cantonese (its impossible to learn cantonese in Hong Kong if you don’t get to practice and to actually speak Cantonese), but more importantly make a real friend with someone who can teach you how to learn Cantonese in Hong Kong.
Looking for Cantonese Classes Hong Kong located?
It’s really hard to find good Cantonese Classes Hong Kong located! There are multiple problems with going to a Cantonese class in Hong Kong.
Perhaps the biggest problem is… its expensive! You will be looking at a minimum of $300 an hour for a private Cantonese class and can go much higher depending on the school or the teacher. You could do a group class instead of a one on one Cantonese class, and yes that might be a little bit cheaper than a private Cantonese class, but isn’t that then becoming very similar to the function of a Language Exchange? Why pay for that when you can essentially learn Cantonese in Hong Kong free by joining one of our weekly Language Exchange events?
Cantonese Lessons Hong Kong located…What are they like?
One of the challenges with Cantonese Lessons Hong Kong located is that it can be boring. This is important because the more boring the Cantonese lessons, the less of the language you’ll actually be able to remember. Thats why we make our Language Exchange events fun. Its a central theme in all we do!
If you prefer to take Cantonese lessons that are extremely structured, cover huge amounts of content, and allow virtually zero time to make a friend who can actually speak Cantonese, then Language Exchange Hong Kong is probably not for you. But if you want to actually enjoy the process of being able to learn cantonese in Hong Kong, make awesome local friends, and help them in the same way, then don’t get Cantonese lessons! Come to Language Exchange!
Why not a Cantonese Course Hong Kong located?
One problem with a Cantonese Course Hong Kong located is that if you miss a week, you loose your money and you cant get that time back! The Cantonese course moves on without you.
At Language Exchange Hong Kong, every week is different! It’s not structured like a Cantonese course. Instead, every week we have a different theme or topic that the Language Exchange revolves around, and we will use that a subject to kick off the actual language exchange section of the event. What this means is that if you miss a week, it’s fine, just jump back in the following week as you have time. The flexibility a free Language Exchange provides over a paid Cantonese course is huge, and in reality is a much better fit with peoples busy lives in Hong Kong.
We understand that people want to learn cantonese in Hong Kong, without it killing their work or social life! If you agree with this, then don’t start a Cantonese course Hong Kong located! Instead, come and try out our free language exchange in Hong Kong!
Learn Cantonese in Hong Kong. Have fun and make new friends…. ALL FOR FREE.
What happens at a weekly Language Exchange event?
While we have a high degree of flexibility and regularly change things up for variety sake and to keep things fresh, we do have a basic format that most events follow.
Meet and Greet
Introduce yourself to other language exchange participants and volunteers, and get to know a bit about them while they do the same to you.
Icebreaker / Interactive Game
This is a short and simple group game designed to get people talking and mixing in amongst each other. Most people don’t know each other so these icebreakers are a fun way to get people chatting.
In this section our amazing language exchange volunteers will quickly teach the basics around the theme for the day, and may introduce some key vocabulary.
This is where the bulk of the Language Exchange time is actually spent, talking to each other! We split the room up into rows and face people across from each other. We then give the theme of the day and set a time for people to have a conversation about that (or anything they like!) You might have 3 minutes (sometimes a little longer, depending on how many people are there and how much time we have) to get to chat with the person opposite you and to get to know a bit about them. Then once the time is up, you get to move to the seat next to you and talk to the next person. This way you’ll get a chance to talk to everyone! It’s fun and casual, and the highlight of the Language Exchange! Hopefully you finish with a few new friends that can help you along on your language learning journey, as you do the same for them : )
The Language Exchange philosophy
We focus all our events on these 5 values:
Regular weekly Language Exchange events are always free. You only need to register online, but other than that there is nothing else to do! Just show up. Many other Hong Kong Language Exchanges charge a fee or make you buy something to attend. Our heart is to provide a great service to the community, and our wonderful volunteers make all this possible! We hope you appreciate them! We may occasionally put on parties and other social events that might have a small cost if food is supplied, but these events are special end are not our regular language exchanges. If there is no food, there is no cost!
People in Hong Kong are busy. If something isn’t actually fun, it’s so hard to stay committed to it. Especially learning a language. We believe in using fun as a key to learning! This is not a serious lesson, and you’ll be disappointed if thats what you’re looking for. We hope that every language exchange is something that you enjoy and would like to come back to. We want it to be fun!
Our philosophy is that the best way to learn a language is to actually speak it regularly. The best way to do this is through friendship! You cant learn Cantonese in a 30 minute or one our lesson, you need a friend!
We wont be going through vocabulary lists together, but will focus on actually speaking the language and building friendships. We do this through fun little games and icebreakers that get everyone talking and connecting (most people have come alone and don’t know anyone), and then we finish with the bulk of our time dedicated to what we call “Speed Swap”, which is where the actual language exchange happens. So our focus is on making it a great social event where people can genuinely connect.
Maybe you’ve visited another language exchange in Hong Kong and had a bad experience. Sometimes disingenuous people target various online communities and language exchanges for reasons other than learning a language, and can harass genuine members. In extreme cases these people harass others and try to aggressively solicit business opportunities, sell products, chase people for a relationship, recruit students for their language school etc. This can create a negative experience for people who are there to genuinely learn a language and connect.
Rest assured, we have a ZERO tolerance policy on anyone that fits this description! We work hard to make sure that our language exchange is always a safe environment! Any complaints received will be thoroughly investigated and if found to be true, that person will be asked to leave and will not be allowed to attend future events. We do not tolerate any level of harassment.

Who runs Language Exchange Hong Kong?
Language Exchange is free because it’s run by a team of committed and talented volunteers who have a passion for language and making new friends. They have no commercial interest in the Language Exchange and give up their time weekly as a way to serve the community. Other Hong Kong Language Exchanges are often run by people who have a commercial interest in the language exchange (want to start a language school, become a tutor etc) and are prospecting for potential customers. Not us! We are free forever and see this as a service to the wider Hong Kong community.
Our wonderful volunteers have jobs and go to school just like you, and many of them discovered Language Exchange Hong Kong in the same way you did, but after attending the events, decided to join the team! If you would be interested in volunteering, please chat to them to find out how.
Why is it free?
Language Exchange Hong Kong is a community service of Lifehouse International Church Hong Kong. Lifehouse is a fun, English and Cantonese speaking Christian church in Hong Kong. Lifehouse generously provides the venue for Language Exchange to operate in, so there is no cost to the language exchange or its participants. This is essentially why its all free! There is no obligation to attend Lifehouse Church and there will be no Christian content at the Language Exchange (other than the mention of Lifehouse Church being the sponsor). A majority of the people who attend the language exchange have no connection with the church. However you are welcome to stick around after the Language Exchange for one of the bilingual English/Cantonese church services if you are interested. Its also free ; )
